The history of the Dudley canal tunnel, limestone mines and
the industry it supported spans millions of years. The Blackcountry, in
which the Dudley tunnel and canals is located, was geographically unique in that
all the ingredients required to fuel the industrial revolution could be found
within a few metres of each other. Coal, limestone and iron ore were
mined, transported and processed to drive the rapidly expanding industrial
midlands.
The history of this unique structure and the people who
helped build, operate and restore it can be found by accessing the 'time period
links' on the right. There is also a section where some historical
documents can be accessed to support the timelines.
